Addio a B. E. King, il re del soul

Quando sentiamo la meravigliosa canzone Stand by me, del 1961, immediatamente pensiamo alla voce del grande B. E. King re del soul.

Si è spento a 76 anni B. E. King, il cantautore e musicista statunitense che ha fatto la storia del pop e del soul. Ripercorriamo brevemente la sua carriera.

King nacque nel 1938 ad Hederson, nel North Carolina, e all’età di nove anni si trasferì a New York, più precisamente ad Harlem. La sua carriera ebbe inizio alla fine degli anni Cinquanta con il gruppo The Drifters che lasciò, successivamente, nel 1960. Da quel momento in poi assunse il nome d’arte di Ben E. King.

Nel 1961 la sua straordinaria voce, definita come “uno strumento che poteva adattarsi a qualsiasi tonalità”[1], fu premiata con un decimo posto nella classifica americana con la canzone Spanish Harlem. Dopo pochissimi mesi venne pubblicato il singolo, che tutti conoscono, Stand by me. Questa canzone entrò nel cuore del pubblico e “la versione italiana del brano,Pregherò, regalò ad Adriano Celentano un successo da un milione di copie”[2]. Il singolo fu scritto da King insieme a Leiber e Stoller e, nel 1961, la canzone arrivò a posizionarsi tra le prime cinque della classifica americana. Fu un vero successo tanto che il singolo fu riproposto da John Lennon nell’album Rock’nroll, del 1975, e da molti altri artisti.

Nel 1962 registrò un altro brano di successo dal titolo Don’t Play That Song (You lied). Questa canzone fu cantata anche in italiano da Ricky Gianco, con il titolo Tu vedrai. Il medesimo brano fu registrato, negli anni Settanta, anche da Aretha Franklin.

I suoi dischi si mantennero alti nelle classifiche fino al 1964, quando iniziarono ad apparire le prime pop band. Sempre nello stesso anno partecipò anche al Festival di Sanremo insieme a Tony Dallara.

Ricordiamo anche canzoni come Seven Letters, How Can I Forget e Young Boys.

La “voce incandescente di King”[3] è stata definita un classico della musica americana e rimarrà indelebile nella storia della canzone e in ciascuno di noi.
