Music Years 70: the golden years of dance
Music years 70 actually began in 1969, at the height of the hippie culture and following a huge rally that took the name of "Woodstock", which was held in a resort near Bethel a small rural town in Ulster County, in upstate New York.
From 15 to 18 August over 500,000 boys celebrated their three days of peace, love (drugs) and rock and roll music in Woodstock, already known for its artistic activities (organized art festivals). That of Woodstock was the last major event of the hippie movement of the music years 70, which has since spread also increasingly outside the United States, where he was born, though without the cohesion and originality that had allowed in the years 70, events such as the Monterey Pop festival, the Summer of Love in San Francisco and the Woodstock festival.
But who were the boys and girls of Woodstock? The critic John Clellon Holmes of the American generation, that of music years 70 as Beat Generation; "restless boys who drank a lot, they smoked a lot of marijuana, they toured America with hitchhiking, you are exalted listening or improvising jazz, but mostly they wrote and sometimes also published several novels and books of poetry. (…) They drank to feel great and not to prove something; their "excursions" into drugs and promiscuity arising out of curiosity and not from disappointment and disillusion (…) were mostly boys matured too fast from a life increasingly promiscuous to adult life, participate through television and newspapers illustrated the same media, superficial and coarse, of which they used average adults. In this state of equality did not believe the justifications and the compromises of the parents to explain a world increasingly less tied to traditional laws and sought for itself, through personal experience, an autonomous reality and free from moral conventions that their eyes masked only prejudices and clichés ".
What they found boys and girls of this generation at Woodstock? Thirty-two of the most famous musicians and groups of that time which alternated on stage. Certainly the enthusiasm of thousands of boys and girls arrived with the simple word of mouth, from voice to voice, and commercial insight of organizers, they continue the show one day after the expected (was scheduled until 17). While young people had the opportunity to consume huge quantities of Cannabis, LSD and the famous "Orange Sunshine": in this way the festival had great symbolic power to go beyond the limits of the so-called American middle class but, especially, was a great event in the history of rock and costume.
The 1969 was also the year in which the rock extends its spectrum and becomes polyphonic: entries are added and now the "subgenres" began to count the votes not more. From hard rock to contamination with jazz, through the early steps of progressive rock.
The artists who participated in this first Woodstock were: Joan Baez, The Band, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Canned Heat, Joe Cocker, Country Joe and the Fish, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, the Grateful Dead, Arlo Guthrie, Tim Hardin, Keef Hartley, Richie Havens, Jimi Hendrix, Incredible String Band, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Melanie, John Sebastian, Mountain, Quill , Sha-Na-Na, Ravi Shankar, Sly and the Family Stone, Bert Sommer, Sweetwater, Ten Years After, The Who, Johnny Winter.
The 1969 is also linked to another event: the dissolution and the farewell of the components of the legendary band the Beatles their last year together will open with another gig that made history: the Rooftop Concert. Live on the roof of the offices of their record label, the Beatles greeted so their audience. And in England he continued to write important pages in the history of rock: from "Tommy" by The Who until the Rolling Stones concert in Hyde Park, on July 5, two days after the death of their lead guitarist Brian Jones
But there is only this: from London to New York, to the West Coast, dozens of groups continued to advance the frontier of rock: the revolution had begun.
